土曜の丑の日 (doyo no ushi no hi)

lately i have been seeing an abundance of signs proclaiming that nearby conbinis (convenience stores) and restaurants are selling unagi (fresh water eel). this makes me happy because I FREAKING LOVE UNAGI! although you can eat unagi year-round, it is apparently considered a summer food in particular. in fact, there is a specific day dedicated to eating unagi. it is called 土曜の丑の日 (doyo-no-ushi-no-hi) which literally means "the cow day during the summer Doyo period". According to Chinese philosophy, the end of each season is referred to as "Doyo" & this summer Doyo is usually one of the hottest days of the season. (i suppose the translation "cow day" is something like the phrase "dog days of summer" in English?).

anyway, to prevent natsubate "summer fatigue", japanesians eat unagi (high in protein, Vitamin A, and calcium), which is thought to be a great source of stamina and give people more energy. it usually falls between mid-July and early-August. this year it's Monday, July 26. Cannot wait. NOM.

*side note: the file was too large but there is such thing as unagi pizza here. i want to try it. (perhaps i will write a post about pizza. so many odd combinations in this country!)
